And then, there you have it! You're own little piece of math. They are also fun to collect and display. Shells are probably the most famous example of the sequence because the lines are very clean and clear to see. It's just-a thing that exists-a wonderful, inspiring, glorious thing.As you may have guessed by the curve in the box example above, shells follow the progressive proportional increase of the Fibonacci Sequence. Yes, it's a sequence of numbers that still buzzes through my brain daily, and yes, you can use it to compose your shots with math and that's amazing, but it's not a rule. In the end, the Fibonacci Sequence isn't a rule of composition you have to follow. Then, all of a sudden, "Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow" is not just a stupid painting a 4-year-old could do, it's a depiction of the Golden Ratio in its simplest form possible by a master artist. Mondrian and other artists of the De Stÿl movement forced their viewers to pay attention to composition by stripping away everything but the structural elements of composition, lines and colors. ![]() ![]() I mean, Piet Mondrian looks like a complete hack until you realize that neoplasticism isn't just about grids with straight lines and primary colors it's a distillation of composition through abstraction. However, one can't deny the impact the Golden Ratio and other compositional techniques have had on the art world. That's the glory of art: there are no rules. So, what makes the Fibonacci Sequence so special? Don't we filmmakers tend to use the Rule of Thirds in composition anyway? Nature, for the most part, is a numbers game, revealing how so many of the structures we see in our world and beyond are made up of discernable patterns and sequences.
